With the cold weather, the flu and the winter in general we've all been reading a lot recently. What could be lovelier that curling up in front of the fire with a good book and a cute dog? Here's some of the books we've been interested in of late. Please share any good books you've enjoyed recently too, I love getting book recommendations.
My 6 year-old daughter has been reading:
Lots and lots of Beatrix Potter. We have almost the whole collection now.
The Best Loved Doll by Rebecca Caudill.
Ruby Redfort Look into My Eyes by Lauren Child. Lauren Child is the mastermind behind Charlie and Lola and Clarice Bean, all of which we have loved over the years. Ruby Redfort fits right in.
Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen. Love, love, love this tender, sweet book with gorgeous illustrations. This is a real favorite of mine too.
Anything by Nic Bishop. Oh how she loves these books. We've read Butterflies and Moths, Marsupials and she was giddy yesterday when she found Frogs in the library.
Also she is reading, well devouring really, all of my son's old Magic Tree House books. She is reading at least one a day. There's enough of a story line, factual information and new vocabulary to keep her super interested but they are easy enough to read in a relatively short period of time. If you haven't tried these books out yet they are worth the investment.
My 8 year-old son is reading:
Herbert's Wormhole by Peter Nelson
Mightier Than the Sword: World Folktales for Strong Boys by Jane Yolen
Wokenstein (The Creature from my Closet) by Obert Skye and the sequel Potterwookie.
He's recently finished The Hobbit and is starting on The Fellowship of the Rings. We read The Hobbit together and I loved it, so I am excited for our next adventure.
Saint George and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges
And the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book by Jeff Kinney.
And me, well I have been reading:
Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon. I am not loving it as much as his previous books yet but it is early days and I'm going to persevere.
Embroidery Companion: Classic Designs for Modern Living by Alicia Paulson. Gorgeous. So many projects I want to make in here.
Sommerland: Sticken, Nahen, Dekorieren & Filzen. I do so love these German craft books.
Cleaning House by Kay Willis Wyma. I have only dipped into this one but I like it so far.
The Homemade Home for Children by Sania Pell.
Craft-a-Day 365 Simple Handmade Projects by Sarah Goldschadt. Great resource book especially for holiday crafts and rainy days.
The Tasha Tudor Cookbook: Recipes and Reminiscences from Corgi Cottage. I bought this as much for the illustrations and love of Tasha Tudor as anything else.
So you, what are you reading?
